Meet Our Doc: Pooja Mehta, MD, Digestive Health Institute

I fell in love with pediatrics when I
was a medical student and rotated on my first pediatric patients, and I was just
humbled by how resilient and how strong they were. I just wanted to spend the
rest of my life trying to be part of that. I like telling my younger patients
that my first name is Pooja and they can call me Dr. Poo. They either
find that to be really gross or they think that’s funny and we
can talk about it. Just chatting with them and talking to them openly is a good
way to connect with them, and asking them questions rather than asking their
parents questions so you really get to know what they’re feeling and thinking. I
think being a parent helps connecting with parents. I work a lot with kids who
have food allergies. When my eldest child was diagnosed with food allergies
that really helped me connect with parents on a different level. So I was
doing work related to that and research related to that even before my child was
diagnosed, and then after that I think it provided a different perspective.
